Inspiring Inclusion - International Women's Day

8 Mar 2024

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, and we at BZ are proud to be a part of it. This International Women’s Day, we’re thrilled to highlight the perspectives and journeys of two of our colleagues, who exemplify the theme for this year - ‘Inspire Inclusion’.

Annabel Todd - Regional Business Development Director (NW)
'In my role, I ensure I take every opportunity to advocate for and support women throughout our business and across the wider industry. Within the Manchester region, we’ve created a supportive network with a strong representation of professional women. We can easily reach-out to each other and offer business support and career guidance, with open and honest discussion (for many) on juggling family, career, and general ‘life’.

My role gives me visibility and I believe it’s important for women to be seen in managerial roles in the finance sector, especially to the more junior women in the industry, or those just starting out. I hope I can be proof that they can do what could be perceived as a predominantly male role in a male environment. I actively encourage others to further develop their careers and to flourish and support them in any way I can. It is so important for all of us to create an environment where all women are valued, respected, and seen as equals. I’m also a massive believer that diverse teams/businesses/boards make for better business. Diversity equals success.

Over the last 18 months, I have worked with the Senior Management Team at BZ, ensuring that our policies reflect BZ’s dedication to equality and diversity to ensure the future growth of BZ will support women, no matter what life/career stage they are at.'

Jill Pickering – Treasury Manager (Head Office)
'I work in asset-based lending in London. This industry has traditionally been thought of as a male dominated arena. BZ has developed a strong and diverse team of people including me. I am female and over 50. I was over 50 when BZ recruited me into a senior managerial role, where I head up a team of 4. I didn’t intentionally recruit an all-female team – it’s just that the individuals were the perfect fit for the job, and the existing team dynamic. The team has an eclectic mix of career-stage/age/personality/interests – but we all have a strong work ethic and there’s a strong and supportive bond across the team.

BZ actively encourages continual personal development. I am currently working on my own technical development and one of the team is studying for her professional accountancy exams; both are supported and funded by BZ. I support the growth of all the team, through mentoring and on-the job training and development. They, in turn, show their support in terms of covering during study/exam times.

Mental and physical wellbeing are also key at BZ; it makes the resources available for general wellbeing. I ensure that my team is aware of what’s offered to them and encourage open and honest dialogue and flexibility. We all have lives and issues to deal with, that can sometimes draw heavily on our time and mental state (women still seem to carry much of the load in terms of family responsibilities) and I encourage understanding, flexibility, and team support, particularly during times when team members need that bit of extra help. I have seen that this matters hugely to the team and is highly valued. I believe it plays a huge part in being inclusive and retaining good people.'

As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2024, we take pride in our commitment to fostering a culture where all women are empowered, valued, and included. By collectively breaking barriers and nurturing diversity, we pave the way for a more equitable and inclusive society for generations to come.
